Actress Shannen Doherty, best known for her iconic roles in TV shows like Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, passed away on Saturday at the age of 53 after a long battle with cancer.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” her publicist, Leslie Sloane, said in a statement. “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie.”
Doherty’s career spanned over four decades. She gained fame as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210, a series that followed a group of Beverly Hills teenagers navigating relationship and family issues. You Tube
Her performance earned her several award nominations. Doherty reprised her role as Brenda in the 2008 reboot, where her character had become a theatre actress.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015, Doherty underwent a mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy. She announced her remission in 2017, but the cancer returned in 2019.
Throughout her battle, she remained open about her experiences, sharing her journey on social media. In a June 2023 Instagram video, she revealed that her cancer had spread to her brain. Despite the disease spreading to her bones, she remained determined to fight.
“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating,” she told People magazine in November 2023.
Born in Memphis, Doherty began acting as a child, with early appearances in TV series such as Voyagers, Our House, and Father Murphy. At age 11, she starred as Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie. Her first major film role came in 1985 with Girls Just Want to Have Fun, alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.
In 1988, she portrayed Heather Duke in the iconic teen film Heathers, starring alongside Winona Ryder, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker.
During her time on 90210, Doherty struggled with the pressures of fame, earning a reputation as a troublemaker on set. “I was very confused back then about what I wanted for myself, and the attention was way too much,” she reflected. “I didn’t always handle it that well.”
She later found success on Charmed, a show about three sisters who were witches. Doherty also appeared in North Shore, set in a Hawaii hotel, and the offbeat comedy film Mallrats.
Shannen Doherty’s legacy as a talented actress and her courageous battle with cancer have left an indelible mark on her fans and the entertainment industry.
