Russia launched a coordinated assault on Ukraine Monday morning, deploying over 100 missiles and around 100 attack drones.
The strikes, occurring during the morning rush hour, resulted in at least five fatalities and targeted energy facilities across multiple regions. Power outages and water supply disruptions were reported in several areas, including parts of Kyiv.
The attack, marking one of the most intense in recent weeks, struck critical infrastructure in at least ten regions.
Russia’s increased focus on the Ukrainian power grid since March aims to weaken Ukraine’s system ahead of the winter months when heating and electricity are crucial.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described the attack as one of the largest combined strikes, emphasizing the stealthy nature of the assault on civilian infrastructure.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed damage to 15 regions, with significant impact on the energy sector.
In response, Ukrainian officials have called for the ability to conduct long-range strikes into Russia. Ukraine has developed new long-range drones capable of hitting deep Russian targets, including oil refineries and military airfields.
The Russian defense ministry stated that high-precision weapons were used to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, claiming it supported the military-industrial complex.
Poland’s military was put on alert following the assault, which affected western Ukrainian regions bordering NATO.
The attack caused disruptions in Moldova’s power grid, linked to Ukraine’s network, and damaged facilities in several Ukrainian regions, including Rivne, Volyn, Khmelnytsk, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa.
Kyiv experienced blasts and air defense engagements, with reports of damage to an apartment block in Lutsk and strikes on a railway facility in Sumy.
The U.S. embassy had previously warned of an increased risk of attack around Ukrainian Independence Day, observed on Saturday.
Both Russia and Ukraine maintain that their strikes target each other’s military infrastructure, denying deliberate attacks on civilians.
