(JERUSALEM) Israel launched airstrikes across southern Lebanon early Sunday in what it described as a preemptive strike against Hezbollah.
This action came in response to Hezbollah’s announcement that it had launched hundreds of rockets and drones in retaliation for the death of one of its top commanders, Fouad Shukur, last month.
The escalating conflict has raised fears of a broader regional war that could involve the U.S., Iran, and other militant groups.
The tension also threatens to derail efforts to prove a ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel has been in conflict with Hamas, an ally of Hezbollah, for over 10 months.
The Israeli military stated that Hezbollah was preparing a large-scale attack on Israel.
In response, around 100 Israeli planes participated in airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions. Lebanese media reported casualties and damage across southern Lebanon, with one person confirmed dead in the town of Khiam.
Hezbollah claimed to have fired more than 320 rockets and deployed many drones targeting Israeli military sites.
The group hinted at further attacks, stating that the first phase of its retaliation was finish.
The U.S. National Security Council and President Joe Biden are closely monitoring the situation. The U.S. has reaffirmed its support for Israel’s right to defend itself while working towards regional stability.
The conflict has prompted Israel to divert flights at Ben-Gurion International Airport and has led to heightened military alertness.
Lebanese officials and international observers fear the conflict spiral into a full-scale war, drawing in multiple nations and leading to significant civilian casualties and displacement on both sides.
As tensions rise, international diplomatic efforts continue to prevent further escalation and achieve a ceasefire.
Israel has stated it will respond decisively to any attacks, particularly those targeting its civilian population. The conflict’s outcome remains uncertain, with the potential for significant regional implications.
