Through meticulous open-source research, Mediazona, a Russian independent media organization, in collaboration with BBC Russia, has verified the names of 59,725 Russian soldiers who have been killed since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Since Mediazona’s previous update in early July, 1,518 new names have been added to this casualty list.
The journalists caution that the true number of Russian military deaths is likely much higher.

On July 5, Russian media outlets Meduza and Mediazona released a report estimating that around 120,000 Russian troops have died since the invasion began.
The number of Russian military casualties has surged recently, following a failed renewed offensive by Russian forces.

Research by BBC Russia and Mediazona reveals that Russia has lost over 10,000 soldiers in Ukraine over the past six months.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with the BBC on July 18, claimed that about 20,000 Russian troops were killed during Russia’s unsuccessful offensive in Kharkiv Oblast.
The Kyiv Independent has not independently verified these figures.

Since the onset of Russia’s comprehensive war against Ukraine, more than 3,700 officers, including 437 of Lieutenant Colonel rank or higher, have been killed in combat.
Additionally, analysts report that at least 11,933 Russian convicts have been killed on Ukraine’s eastern front.
